Frozen is out! I did NOT work on it, but it was a pleasure seeing it made here at the Studio! Congrats to all the amazing men and women that worked so hard on the film, its a beautiful beautiful thing.
I sometimes read way too many opinions and they get me riled up. Sorry in advance, these are my thoughts. I could be incredibly biased.
A good feminist movie isn’t a movie without men altogether, its a movie with girls that shine in spite of the guys, good or bad. That’s why I found Brave not as empowering, because all the men are doofuses to begin with. Just because a movie has X amount of girls vs Y amount of guys, does not make it a feminist, or anti-feminist movie. The argument that Disney stripped Frozen of strong female characters would only be offensive if the end goal was to keep strong female characters out of of it altogether. Which it DIDN’T. So frankly, I find that people who still refuse to see Frozen because “FEMINISM” to be a bit stubborn.
Also the critique of always needing thin beautiful women characters is a critique on the industry as a whole, or society even. Its not a problem that started with Disney, and its not a problem that ends with Disney. Its an everywhere problem.
